Beer in Green Tree
Last night, DH and I finally hit up the Hop House in Green Tree. We were feelin’ a quick and easy dinner and it definitely fit the bill.
We got there and seated ourselves at about 6:30 p.m. I’d checked out the extensive menu online and wondered how a place with so much food was allowed to have smoking (meaning that food makes up a less than 10 percent of revenues, I believe). The answer — the place is definitely a bar that serves food.
No matter, though. No one in the place was smoking when we got there. Phew. (But even if there had been, I had been warned….)
DH ordered a coke and I ordered a Fireside Ale. Unfortunately, the tap had been kicked. So, I got the Mad Hatter instead.
I had definite trouble picking a beer. There were 30-some on tap (and it was sooo dark I had trouble reading the menu)!
Slightly sweet and a tad malty, but definitely floral and hoppy. Pretty good. And a good food match. Not something I’d typically order, but I’d say it was quite good.
DH requested his standard — fried cheese. I suspect these were the commercially available frozen kind. But the sauce was garlicky and good. We’d order them again, no question.
I was feelin’ some greens to go with my bar food.
So I got a house salad, which was a nice mix of greens, some olives, mushrooms, red onion, and a TON of cheese. For about $3, a steal. (And about as healthy as the menu got!)
DH ordered the 1/2 pound burger.
Our server didn’t ask how well done DH wanted it, nor did he specify. So, it came well done. Which DH was not overly happy about. But he said the burger had a nice crispness on the outside and was still juicy.
On the side, he had the fries, which were fine, and the veggies, which looked pretty gross. DH didn’t touch them. I’m guessing they were frozen and microwaved. Definite misorder.
I orered the buffalo shrimp, which came with fries. Perfect bar food. The shrimp were nicely fried and spicy. The fries weren’t anything special, but met my needs for fried food with my beer. It wasn’t served with ranch, but I’d ask for it next time.
As we ate, the people at the table next to us got a pizza, which looked AWESOME. Next time, we’ll order that!
As for the service, it was prompt and polite. She kept DH’s soda glass full (and he had about 4 or 5 glasses in the less than 1.5 hours we were there). She did do the “oh, wait, you put your fork on the side of your salad plate, well, I’ll just put it on the table next to you” thing I hate SOOOOOO much. But I can overlook that, considering the spot and the nearly endless filling of DH’s soda glass.
The verdict: We’ll be back for pizza and a different beer.

How funny, my BF and I just went there a couple weekends ago, but to the one in Ross Twp. We were going to hit up the Carnegie one, but there was a lot of traffic on the Parkway and we just didn’t feel like dealing with it.
We got the pizza (it was meat lover’s or their version of it)… it was pretty freakin awesome. We got the larger one (with the House Pretzels for appetizer… yum!) and we were both stuffed, with takeout boxes for the next day or two.
Definitely go back for the pizza. And I’m going to have to return for that salad… that cheese is calling my name!
The pizza is definitely good. I’m looking forward to going back and sitting outside this summer (no smoke!).
