Quest Update

Well, it’s been a while since I did my last restaurant quest update.  I’m glad to say we’ve managed to to keep on course.  Here’s the rundown.

April — Hop House

May — Plum

June — La Tavola

July — Kous Kous.  Which apparently escaped review.  So, I’ll give you a brief re-cap.  Took a bottle of zin and met my friend M.  I had the app platter, which was HUGE and delish.  I also ordered the sardines, because I was curious.  I had some trouble with the bones, but otherwise thought it was pretty tasty (actually).  M had the salmon, which was also ENORMOUS.  She loved it.  So, we left very full and happy.

CSA Week 9

Another summer week gone; another week’s worth of CSA treats:

Patio Pizza

As you’ve probably figured out, there’s very little I enjoy more than a good glass of wine on a patio.  On Friday night, after the great dinner debate, DH and I decided upon Il Pizzaiolo on the main drag in Mt. Lebanon.  And I’m glad we did.

We sat out on the patio, where I selected a glass of Italian white wine with some help from our server.  It was dry and a bit creamy.

DH ordered an app.  I can’t recall the name, but it was basically cheesy mashed potatoes breaded and fried.  For whatever reason and despite the obvious appeal, neither of us particularly cared for it.  We agreed a bit of sauce might have helped.  Oh, well.

I was jonesing for some greens.

So, I had the tricolored salad with lots of fresh cracked pepper.  It had a light lemony vinagrette and was perhaps a bit salty, but the portion was huge and it really hit the spot.  I probably should have just shared the app and had the salad because I was pretty full when my entree arrived.

The famed margherita pizza.  It was saucy and delish.  I took most of it home.

There’s a ton of debate about this pizza on the ‘net.  I’m going to go on record as saying that I love it, but those who are chain pizza fans or like their crust thick will not appreciate paying $14 for this pie.  Consider yourself warned.  But if you want fresh, homemade ingredients and don’t mind a slightly floppy crust, it’s totally worth it.

DH had the lasagna, which he thoroughly enjoyed.  The pasta looked homemade and DH said the sausage in it was quite good.  He ate the entire thing, which is always a good sign.

The service was polite, but rather non-descript.  Fine there.

In the end, DH and I left full and happy.  We hadn’t been to Il Pizzaiolo in years, in part because we’d heard it had changed — that prices had gone up and portion sizes down.   Thankfully, we found none of that to be true on Friday.  While still a tad pricey for pizza and pasta, the high quality and portion sizes — and PATIO! — make it worth it in my opinion.
